Il s’agit d’un recueil de trois histoires sans rapport direct entre elles si ce n’est qu’elles se passent dans le Japon médieval et pendant l’hiver. Enfin, pendant ses 3 histoires on parle d’un personnage de la mythologie niponne : la princesse blanche.
Récit 1 :
Une jeune femme part dans la montagne pour abattre le loup qui terrorise les habitants de la région et qui a surtout tué son père. Malheureusement elle est attaquée par des chiens sauvages avant de trouver son ennemi et ne peut se défendre devant le nombre impressionant d’adversaires qui l’assaillent. Elle pense la mort venue mais quelques jours plus tard elle sort de l’inconscience et se retrouve dans un endroit qui lui est totalement inconnu blessée mais toujours en vie…
Récit 2 :
Un homme se souvient de sa jeunesse. Lorsqu’il dû quitter son village natal pour partir à la guerre, il avait tout quitté y compris sa promise, une jeune fille terriblement belle qui lui avait juré de l’attendre. Tous les deux s’étaient fait une promesse au bord du lac où ils avaient coutume de se retrouver. Lui reviendrait en vie pour l’emmener et elle l’attendrait tous les jours sur ces rives. Il se rend au bord du lac où tous deux s’étaient jurés de se retrouver mais une terrible surprise l’y attend…
Récit 3 :
Alors que la guerre fait rage, un jeune homme s’est trop éloigné du champs de bataille dans le but de surprendre ses ennemis et se perd dans la montagne alentours. Mais rapidement la situation se transforme en cauchemar à cause d’une tempète de neige. Il cherche à retrouver les autres en vain et se perd totalement sans rien pour l’aider à survivre, il repense alors à sa fiancée qui l’attend et à qui il a promis de revenir en vie. En colère et mort de faim l’homme désespéré va tirer ses flèches par jalousie sur un couple de hérons mais les apparences sont trompeuses…
